The Prohibition Era - Free Essay Example

The 1920s was a very strange decade a lot of things happened, a lot of people lost a lot of money, the great depression happened and all the stock markets crash in 1929 (khan academy). The president couldnt save America anymore he tried and he just made it worst. The Great Gatsby really explained and went through the rough times of the 1920s but there was also good times like how Gatsby made most his money of the 1920s. He owned some drug stores, a lot of drug stores. He built them up himself. (Fitzgerald 116) this quote explains that Gatsby owns a lot of drugs stores but for what reason why would he own drugstores. In the 1920s there was a lot of stuff happening and some of that stuff was alcohol becoming illegal. Bootleggers were a thing in the 1920s which is were people sold alcohol illegalling and made a lot of money off of it (The mob museum/Prohibition) . Gatsby was known to be a good man and also known to be a bad one you will figure out which one he actually is later on in the story. Everything I have been talking about is prohibition and it was a huge part of the 1920s, the amendment that banned alcohol and the sale of alcohol is the 18th amendment which was appealed later on. The prohibition era was filled with a lot of stuff including everything that was just talked about and everything thats about to be talked about, great things arrived in this era but bad things also came forth. In 1920s there was so much going on everyone still talks about it today. One of the biggest things that happened and that will never be forgotten was Womens right to vote in 1919 but it really started going into effect in the early 1920s. The roles of Women in the 1920s varied considerably. The majority of women remained in the traditional role of housewife. However, the number of working women increased by 25% as a result of the work they had undertaken during WW1. Roles of 1920s women in the workplace included factory workers, secretaries, sales clerks and telephone operators. The number of women attending college rose to 10% of the population by the end of the 1920s(prohibition era women rights). Women started to become a lot more independent in America, by them getting the right to vote and more of a opportunity to change their styles and clothes, they were cutting their hair and wearing short skirts. One of the biggest things women were starting to do was getting more important jobs like congress or just in the government. Women didnt need a man anymore they could go get their own jobs and play sports and raise kids without them, they made their own income and just didnt need the mans support anyone they had become independent (Morris). The 1920s was called The golden age of sports, because some of the greatest athletes and the biggest sports to this day were starting to emerge. In the 1920s it was ok for women to play sports like basketball but they were expected to play more lady-like sports like golf, swimming, tennis, and field hockey. The woman in the 1920s started a management team for all the sports that they played. It was called The Big Six because there was six sports that they could play basketball, swimming, hockey, hiking, track, and tennis, and there was a manager for each one of those sports and thats why there were six girls in the management. The college of wooster which is where this information was found made the women at the school take a swimming class before they could graduate. So, the college did that which made it mandatory for women to learn how to swim and I think that is a great thing. One of the famous women that came from this was in the women sports association, In 1921, Kathleen Lowri e, came in the, making an impact on the women sports association as well. She served as Chair of the Department of Womens Physical Education from 1921 to 1953 (Wooster college). She was responsible for a lot of things but one of the main things that she did was developing the Womens Athletic Association. I talked about this earlier, bootlegging, the illegal sale of alcohol, and if you dont understand there was a amendment in the 1920s that made alcohol illegal it was the 18th amendment. No one liked this amendment, almost everyone was breaking the law by buying and selling the alcohol. The buyers of the alcohol could get it everywhere some people get it from their friends or others got it from drugstores or other stores. In The Great Gatsby there was a man who was very bad that worked with Gatsby his name was Wolfsheim and he ran Gatsby drugstores and sold the alcohol from them. Crime was one of the best ways to get money in the 1920s selling alcohol was a big business, everyone wanted it but not everyone could get it. So if you had it you can make money off of it at any time. While the sale of alcohol was banned during Prohibition, there were some loopholes. Many people got doctors prescriptions for medicinal whiskey (Chicago History Museum). The worst thing about all this is how bad the some of the people actually were that was selling the illegal alcohol. The 1920s was the rise of the American Mafia which is italian-american organized-crime network with operations across the United States. The two biggest cities that rose to success by selling illegal alcohol was New York and Chicago. After Prohibition, the Mafia moved into other criminal ventures, from drug trafficking to illegal gambling, while also infiltrating labor unions and legitimate businesses such as construction and New Yorks garment industry. Some of the biggest mafia bosses to this day is Al Capone and John Gotti. Al capone was a american gangster that lived and stayed in Chicago he was a Chicago boss for seven years. He is the co-founder of the chicago outfit, he is also known for being nicknamed Scarface. His reign of crime came to a stop when he was thirty-three years old. He later died in jail January 25, 1947 by pneumonia (FBI). John Gotti was an Ital ian-American gangster who became boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City. Gotti and his brothers grew up in poverty and turned to a life of crime at an early age. He was one of the biggest mafia bosses there ever was. Bertram said in his article that sixteen years after Gotti death he is still a huge figure in popular culture. John Gotti was a murderer and a theft and a huge criminal and he is still talked about to this day. Some people dont realize how much a bad person can be talked about, he died on June 10, 2002. He died from head and neck cancer. Bootlegging and crime in the 1920 was crazy so many people were doing it, not that many people were caught because they did it in secret spots like speakeasy. Speakeasys are pretty much just private bars, to get in you had to know the password. Prohibition was the ban of alcohol, but that didnt mean people still couldnt get there hands on it. There was a lot of ways people got alcohol back in the 1920s. They could get them from speakeasy, they could get them from the mafias, you could get some from a random guy if u wanted to. One of the main ways was crazy though because it wasnt illegal to get it this way. You could get alcohol and not be arrested or in trouble. The Volstead Act included a few interesting exceptions to the ban on distributing alcohol( Andrews). Sacramental wine was still legal for religious reasons, the number of priests and rabbis skyrocketed after they knew this exceptions. Another exception was the drugstores, the doctors could sell medical whiskey for anything from a foot ache to a broken arm. With a physicians prescription, patients could legally buy a pint of hard liquor every ten days. Many speakeasies started to say that they were pharmacies and acted as if they were doctors and they were prescrib ing alcohol to their patients(Andrews). The craziest thing about the prohibition era was how many people died from it. You think how would people die from alcohol becoming illegal, well they tried to get the alcohol. The alcohol was illegal so u had to get it from random people that probably shouldnt be making or selling alcohol. The moonshine that people called the bathtub gin had a famously foul taste, and those desperate enough to drink it also ran the risk of being struck blind or even poisoned. People were dying from drinking alcohol quicker than usual. It killed around 10,000 people before the amendment was finally appealed. Usually alcohol kills people slowly but when people poorly made the alcohol it hurts them faster and poisoned them and killed them. Temperance movements had long been active in the American political scene with the goal of promoting abstinence from drinking alcohol. The movement was first organized in the 1840s by religious denominations, primarily Methodists. This initial campaign started out strong and made a small amount of progress throughout the 1850s but lost strength shortly thereafter. Womans Christian Temperance Union were the people that wanted prohibition and were also the people that started the dry movement in the 1880s, they didnt like how alcohol affected men and how they acted with their wives and children, they thought of alcohol as a home killer. One of the monumental figures from this early period was Carrie Nation. Founder of a chapter of the WCTU, Nation was driven to close down bars in Kansas. The tall, brash woman was known to be vehement and often threw bricks into saloons. At one point in Topeka, she even wielded a hatchet, which would become her signature weapon. Nation would not see Pro hibition herself as she died in 1911 (Spruce Eats). The prohibition party was also known as the dry party because they didnt drink so they were dry and sober. They wanted everyone to be sober nationwide, but they believed that it cant be achieved under the leadership of either democratic or republican parties. Dry candidates ran for local, state, and national offices and the partys influence peaked in 1884. In the 1888 and 1892 presidential elections, the Prohibition Party held 2 percent of the popular vote (Spruce Eats). It was getting really bad in America people were drinking a lot more than they should have. Alcohol dependence was a growing problem in the U.S. for over a century before Prohibition came into law. In 1830, American boys and men aged fifthteen and older drank an average of 88 bottles of whiskey per year, three times what Americans drinks today. Drinking wasnt a new thing alcohol had been an important part of the American food culture since Colonial times. Americans routinely drank at every meal breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the early 1700s, the most common drinks were weak beer and cider, which were only mildly intoxicating. Americans replaced weaker ciders and beers with these more distilled liquors. Before long, alcohol dependence became a widespread epidemic. Men lost their jobs and wasnt as nice or spent enough time with their families, under the spell of demon liquor. Societies dedicated to sober living formed in several major cities (Avey). Most people will never really understand prohibition. Prohibition was the ban of the manufacture and sale of alcohol, that doesnt mean that u cant drink the alcohol that u had before. So if you had a bunch of alcohol right before prohibition u can still drink it but u can not sell or transport it. It is actually illegal to bring the alcohol that u already saved to someone elses house that counts as transportation. You couldnt get arrested for drinking alcohol in the prohibition era you could only getting arrested for selling it to one of your friends or making the alcohol. Something that was also happening was some states were not going to listen to the amendment, they were not going to become a dry state they did not believe in it. One of the main states that did this was Maryland. Under the Prohibition Amendment, both the federal government and the states shared responsibility for enforcing alcohol laws. Maryland was the only state that refused to pass a law to enforce the unpopula r law. The governor throughout the entire period of Prohibition opposed it. The Prohibition era crimes were skyrocketing, women were finally being given their rights, businesses were going out of business, and stocks were dropping like crazy. After the 1920s we got a better president because the one before the one we had messed everything up and pretty much caused The Great Depression. The Great Gatsby related to this decade because thats when it was, it was based in the 1920s. Gatsby made his money off of the stock markets and off of the illegal alcohol. Thats how a lot of people made their money back in that time, it was honestly ok to do illegal things back then because it wasnt really illegal or it shouldnt have been illegal at least. Prohibition wasnt a good thing and it really made no sense, people just thought it would help families but if anything it taught families that doing illegal things is ok because even though it was a illegal they still did it. The roaring twenties was a crazy thing most likely one of the craziest decades ever, so much was starting up and ending at the same time.

The Most Dangerous Game By Richard Connell - 857 Words

Richard Connell, the author of â€Å"The Most Dangerous Game,† used the setting in different functions through perseverance in his short story. One of the most critical elements of plot used in this story was suspense. In â€Å"The Most Dangerous Game,† the setting was used to create this, especially through water and foreshadowing. At the very beginning of the story, Whitney, Rainsford’s hunting partner, tells him that the nearby island was called â€Å"Ship-Trap Island.† This foreshadowing leads to a more tense and suspicious atmosphere during the time that Rainsford stays there. However, the most prominent examples of suspense were used in the water-related scenes. For example, the story started off with Rainsford being violently thrown into the brisk waters of the Atlantic, with Connell using words like â€Å"struggled,† â€Å"strangle,† and â€Å"anguish.† This is a completely different mood from the earlier, more relaxing atmosphere of a private yacht. Water also created suspense at the end of the short story. Short, choppy sentences at the climax of the story made Rainsford s eem exhausted and made the short moment have a lasting impression. Even though both of those moments, in total, were probably only one minute long, the author’s carefully-crafted lines make it seem like twenty. You could also argue that the whole plot was a melting pot of suspense, as Rainsford was playing a game that, if he lost, would cost him his life. This is all perfectly described by Oscar Wilde, who stated, â€Å"TheShow MoreRelatedThe Most Dangerous Game By Richard Connell1398 Words   |  6 Pages Richard Connell s short work of fiction â€Å"The Most Dangerous Game† blurs the line between humans and animals and explores some of the causes of fear, especially the primal fear of being hunted. The Cold War in Europe and Asia A comparison Essay Example

The Cold War in Europe and Asia A comparison Essay The aftermath of the Second World War saw the formation of a bi-polar world, with the United States and the Soviet Union dominating their respective hemispheres. Both the powers were equipped with nuclear arsenal and any direct confrontation could have led to the destruction of the species. In this atmosphere where the stakes are very high, most of the strategic advantage is won through diplomacy and applying political pressure. This variety of wielding power has come to be known as the Cold War, where advantages were won or lost through tactful diplomacy as against the use of force. The implications of the Cold War were not confined to the partners and allies of the two superpowers. Given the scale of their economies, the superpowers sought to dominate other nations wherever they can, either through ideological coercion on military intervention. Hence, Europe and Asia were also polarized to balance the two sides. Many independent nation states were forced to choose sides between the capitalist democracy of the Western world and the communist soviets of the Eastern world. So, although they were not the central players in the tussle for world domination, many countries in the European and Asian continents aligned themselves with one of the existing dominant powers. The rest of the essay will explore the nature of these affiliations and the essential differences between the situation in Europe and Asia. Long-time partner and a trusted lieutenant of the United States, namely Great Britain, is the leading representative of this western coalition. Other nations that aligned with the United States were Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, etc. The countries of Eastern Europe were imposed with communist governments and hence came under the influence of the Soviet Union. Some of them were Poland, Czechoslovakia, Belarus, etc. Germany was deemed a key prize in the spoils of the Second Great War and so its reigns were bitterly contested. In the end both superpowers had to strike a compromise and divide Germany into their respective halves. This event was a key flashpoint in the years immediately following the end of the War. In the western hemisphere, the peak cold war confrontation manifested in the form of the Cuban Missile crisis. It was the year 1961, under the leadership of President John F. Kennedy; the world came perilously close to a deadly confrontation between the two major powers. The Soviet Union was under the leadership of Nikita Khrushchev. Lying only 145 km from the coast of the USA, Cuba had always been of concern to the United States (America still maintains a naval base there to the present day at Guantanamo). The relations between the two nations took a U-turn with the onset of the communist revolution in 1959. Fidel Castro’s consequent rise to power made Cuba a real and present danger. The pressing concern for the United States was the potential symbolic threat that a communist neighbor would prove to be. The fiasco that was the Bay of Pigs invasion, intended to dispel and if possible eliminate Castro, was an affair of big embarrassment for the Kennedy Administration. Thi s further strained the diplomatic relations between the two countries. At this juncture Castro was left with little option but to strengthen relations with the Soviet Union. It benefited the Soviet Union to respond to Cuba’s call for protection, as setting up a base so near the American coast was of strategic importance. The events of these fortuitous days for mankind unraveled in the backdrop of the cold war. The 50’s were a period of economic and technological advancement for both superpowers. Paralleling this prosperity was the escalating ideological conflict between democracy and communism. The tense couple of weeks that would later be called the Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest this planet came to complete annihilation. Soviet missiles with capabilities to wipe out all major cities in eastern United States were positioned just 90 miles off the coast of Florida. A last minute command from Khrushchev to soviet ships heading to Cuba saved the planet from a potential Armageddon. On the Asian continent, the underdeveloped region of Indo-China proved to be the key cold-war battleground. The Vietnam War is also known as the second of the Indochina Wars. It was waged between the late 1950’s and the mid 1970’s. The lush forested terrain of the Vietnamese country side was the battleground for much of the war. The force of the North Vietnam, which was basically oriented towards communism, was seen as a threat by the American government. It believed that left uncontrolled, the spread of communism would usurp the democratic South Vietnam as well. Hence, the American government decided to send troops in support of South Vietnam and retain its democratic government. This wider context of the war made it one of the tense phases of the Cold war period. The United States, the sole aggressor in the Vietnam War, was forced to draw back its troops as a result of the failed military campaign as well as mounting pressure from its general public. Hence, it could be asserted that the causes that led to the American defeat were multifold. Some of the salient ones include the inability to understand the foreign primitive culture of the Vietnamese and underestimating their military organization skills. The growing unrest of the American public over the number of casualties and the ambiguity of the American motive were also important reasons. The guerilla warfare technique proved too difficult for the G.I.s to tackle. The growing lack of discipline and commitment of the American troops was another key reason for the defeat of the United States in the Vietnam War. Alongside the Cuban Missile crisis of 1962, the Vietnam War was another important flashpoint during the cold war period where the two superpowers came very close to mutual destr uction. In the Far Eastern Asia, China to be more precise, communism was taking firm roots. Under the leadership of Mao Zedong, the Soviet Union had found a willing ally to propagate communist ideology. Although the United States tried several diplomatic maneuvers to undermine the links between the two communist Asian neighbors, the efforts were to prove futile. First of all, the geographic location of China had put it outside the American sphere of influence. Secondly, China had developed a strong military, unaffected by the turmoil of the Second World War, which made any direct confrontation with it a tough proposition. Japan, on the other hand, was recovering from the disastrous consequences of the Atomic bomb attacks and chose not to attract further trouble by remaining neutral in the Cold War period. Elsewhere in Asia, the long confrontation between the United States and U.S.S.R. backed proxies in Afghanistan had frustrated and weakened the latter. During the 1980’s the U.S.S.R. was going through a severe economic slump as well. At this juncture, the Soviet Union was no more in a position to strengthen its war machinery, which gave its rival undisputed advantage, bringing an end to the Cold War. The deteriorating economic conditions stirred the people of the Soviet Union to openly demonstrate against their government’s failure, which by the late 1980’s had reached abysmal levels. People from the communist bloc nations were making desperate attempts to flee to countries in Western Europe. Likewise, people from East Germany were attempting to escape to the more prosperous West Germany in order to avail of better economic and social prospects. The upper echelons of the Soviet government were facing tremendous pressure to act decisively and quickly. The only option left was to dismantle the Union and open the countries to political and economic reforms. Bringing down the Berlin Wall in 1990 was the symbolic act that ushered in a new post-cold war era in the world.

Free Essays on Life Journey Of The Odyssey

Life Journey of The Odyssey The Odyssey is an epic story of one man’s journey as well as the trials and tribulations that he encounters while trying to make it back to his home. Along the way, this story not only follows the guidelines of many other hero stories, but also applies to our everyday struggles both internally and externally. It seems like everyone can look at a story from the odyssey and somehow relate it to a difficulty or a problem that they had to overcome to reach their goal of being happy. These heroic stories have been told throughout the years to help us learn lessons about ourselves and to learn how other people have been able to shine through the hard times to reach happiness. In the book Life Journey: Literature and the Search for Meaning in the Stages of Life by Milt Ford, the ways these books teach us these lessons are analyzed and explained using his theory. Mr. Ford explains that there are three experiences that make up a persons life, they are identity, relationships, and acc omplishments. He goes even further as to apply each one of these experiences into stages of our life such as, childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adult. It in interesting to see how this theory not only applies to The Odyssey but to our lives as well. In The Odyssey there is a young man by the name of Telemachus who is the prince of Ithaca, and the son of the books hero, Odysseus. Though he does not get very old in the book, he does go through some very important times in his life journey, discovering for himself whom he is and what he is made of. In the early stages of the book we see the birth of Telemachus and then hear of things going on at his home. As in Ford’s theory we know that during the identity experience of Telemachus’ childhood, he is experiencing himself. Getting booked into jail Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Getting booked into jail - Essay Example If the suspect is arrested for, let’s say driving under the influence, breath, urine, or blood test has to be conducted. This process may take some hours before the individual is transferred to be booked in a county jail. The jail system does not have any notice of an individual’s arrest until they are forwarded to the jail for bookings. A communication to the jail in a while after an individual’s arrest may find they still are in the pre-booking processing and not in the jail system yet (Cole 227). Many people are concerned by this kind of delay; the pre-booking stage is routine and necessary. When arrested individuals are brought at the jail facility, go through the intake procedure before being contained in the inmate populace. This process can roughly take from 1 to 6 hours and is involved of the booking process, medical screening and the classification interview (Carlson 47). Instantaneously upon appearance at the jail, the convict is tested for any medical conditions which would need immediate treatment. Another medical questionnaire is done later in the booking procedure to ensure all illnesses that an inmate may be having are properly noted and the facility is able to meet the inmate’s medical requirements. During the booking process every inmate is searched to verify that no contraband is brought into the jail facility. They are fingerprinted and photographed. Their charges and personal information are entered into a computer system, their bail calculated, and a law court date is set. There are inmates who may be eligible to be freed on their own recognizance eighteen hours after booking. Majority of inmates are eligible to be bailed out, and to have access to telephones for bail arrangements through family, friends, or bail agents (Frantz 220). When it is confirmed that inmates are not going to be released on

According to some voluntary organizations dedicated to drug and alcohol de-addiction, in the last few years' lots of youngsters have started approaching them. They also say that drug addicts start taking drugs at 13 or 14, but only come to the rehab centers when the situation becomes grim or out of control. This is because they start taking drugs recreationally and by the time they start having problems and decide to seek help it takes time. Unlike social drinking which doesn't affect one's lifestyle, there is nothing like social drugs because substances like cocaine and heroin are very addictive and illegal. The problem arises because most youngsters believe they won't get addicted not realizing that with drugs like cocaine and heroin it's very easy o get hooked on. The history of ligers dates Essay Example for Free

The history of ligers dates Essay The history of ligers dates to at least the early 19th century in India. In 1798, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772–1844) made a colour plate of the offspring of a lion and a tiger. In 1825, G. B. Whittaker made an engraving of liger cubs born in 1824.[3] The parents and their three liger offspring are also depicted with their trainer in a 19th-century painting in the naà ¯ve style. Two liger cubs born in 1837 were exhibited to King William IV and to his successor Queen Victoria. On 14 December 1900 and on 31 May 1901, Carl Hagenbeck wrote to zoologist James Cossar Ewart with details and photographs of ligers born at the Hagenbecks Tierpark in Hamburg in 1897. In Animal Life and the World of Nature (1902–1903), A.H. Bryden described Hagenbecks lion-tiger hybrids: It has remained for one of the most enterprising collectors and naturalists of our time, Mr. Carl Hagenbeck, not only to breed, but to bring successfully to a healthy maturity, specimens of this rare alliance between those two great and formidable felidae, the lion and tiger. The illustrations will indicate sufficiently how fortunate Mr. Hagenbeck has been in his efforts to produce these hybrids. The oldest and biggest of the animals shown is a hybrid born on the 11th May, 1897. This fine beast, now more than five years old, equals and even excels in his proportions a well-grown lion, measuring as he does from nose tip to tail 10 ft 2 inches in length, and standing only three inches less than 4 ft at the shoulder. A good big lion will weigh about 400 lb [] the hybrid in question, weighing as it does no less than 467 lb, is certainly the superior of the most well-grown lions, whether wild-bred or born in a menagerie. This animal shows faint striping and mottling, and, in its characteristics, exhibits strong traces of both its parents. It has a somewhat lion-like head, and the tail is more like that of a lion than of a tiger. On the other hand, it has no trace of mane. It is a huge and very powerful beast.[4] In 1935, four ligers from two litters were reared in the Zoological Gardens of Bloemfontein, South Africa. Three of them, a male and two females, were still living in 1953. The male weighed 340 kg (750 lb) and stood a foot and a half (45 cm) taller than a full grown male lion at the shoulder. Although ligers are more commonly found than tigons today, in At Home In The Zoo (1961), Gerald Iles wrote For the record I must say that I have never seen a liger, a hybrid obtained by crossing a lion with a tigress. They seem to be even rarer than tigons. Size and growth The liger is often believed to represent the largest known cat in the world.[1] Males reach a total length of 3 to 3.5 m,[6][7] meaning they are the size of large Siberian tiger males.[8] Imprinted genes may be a factor contributing to huge liger size.[9] These are genes that may or may not be expressed on the parent they are inherited from, and that occasionally play a role in issues of hybrid growth. For example, in some dog breed crosses, genes that are expressed only when maternally-inherited cause the young to grow larger than is typical for either parent breed. This growth is not seen in the paternal breeds, as such genes are normally counteracted by genes inherited from the female of the appropriate breed.[10] Other big cat hybrids can reach similar sizes; the litigon, a rare hybrid of a male lion and a female tiglon, is roughly the same size as the liger, with a male named Cubanacan (at the Alipore Zoo in India) reaching 363 kg (800 lb).[11] The extreme rarity of these second-generation hybrids may make it difficult to ascertain whether they are larger or smaller, on average, than the liger. It is wrongly believed that ligers continue to grow throughout their lives due to hormonal issues.[citation needed] It may be that they simply grow far more during their growing years and take longer to reach their full adult size. Further growth in shoulder height and body length is not seen in ligers over 6 years old, same as both lions and tigers. Male ligers also have the same levels of testosterone on average as an adult male lion, yet areazoospermic in accordance with Haldanes rule. In addition, female ligers may also attain great size, weighing approximately 320 kg (705 lb) and reaching 3.05 m (10 ft) long on average, and are often fertile. In contrast, pumapards (hybrids between pumas and leopards) tend to exhibit dwarfism. Hercules and Sinbad[ Jungle Island, an interactive animal theme park in Miami, is home to a liger named Hercules, the largest non-obese liger, who is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest living cat on Earth, weighing over 410 kg (904 lb).[12] Hercules was featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Anderson Cooper 360, Inside Edition and in a Maxim article in 2005, when he was only three years old and already weighed 408.25 kg (900 lb). Hercules is healthy and is expected to live a long life. The cats breeding is said to have been a complete accident. Sinbad, another liger, was shown on the National Geographic Channel. Sinbad was reportedly similar in weight to Hercules. Longevity[Shasta, a ligress (female liger) was born at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City on 14 May 1948 and died in 1972 at age 24.[citation needed] Valley of the Kings animal sanctuary in Wisconsin had a male liger named Nook who weighed around 550 kg (1,213 lb), and died in 2007, at 21 years old. Hobbs, a male liger at the Sierra Safari Zoo in Reno, Nevada, lived to almost 15 years of age before succumbing to liver failure and weighed in at 410 kilograms (900 lb). Fertility The fertility of hybrid big cat females is well documented across a number of different hybrids. This is in accordance with Haldanes rule: in hybrids of animals whose sex is determined by sex chromosomes, if one sex is absent, rare or sterile, it is the heterogametic sex (the one with two different sex chromosomes e.g. X and Y). According to Wild Cats of the World (1975) by C. A. W. Guggisberg, ligers and tigons were long thought to be sterile: in 1943, a fifteen-year-old hybrid between a lion and an Island tiger was successfully mated with a lion at the Munich Hellabrunn Zoo. The female cub, though of delicate health, was raised to adulthood.[13] In September 2012, the Russian Novosibirsk Zoo announced the birth of a liliger, which is the offspring of a liger mother and a lion father. The cub was named Kiara. Appearance Colour plate of the offspring of a lion and tiger, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire Ligers have a tiger-like striped pattern that is very faint upon a lionesque tawny background. In addition they may inherit rosettes from the lion parent (lion cubs are rosetted and some adults retain faint markings). These markings may be black, dark brown or sandy. The background colour may be correspondingly tawny, sandy or golden. In common with tigers, their underparts are pale. The actual pattern and colour depends on which subspecies the parents were and on how the genes interact in the offspring. White tigers have been crossed with lions to produce white (actually pale golden) ligers. In theory, white tigers could be crossed with white lions to produce white, very pale or even stripeless ligers. There are no black ligers. Very few melanistic tigers have ever been recorded, most being due to excessive markings (pseudo-melanism or abundism) rather than true melanism; no reports of black lions have ever been substantiated. As blue or Maltese Tigers probably no longer exist, grey or blue ligers are exceedingly improbable. It is not impossible for a liger to be white, but it is very rare Ligers in the wild: It is unlikely a mating of this type would ever occur in the wild, for a number of reasons. Firstly, lion and tiger habitats do not meet, though youll often hear claims that they overlap in one area of the world, this being the Gir National Park and Lion Sanctuary in Bangladesh. The truth is tigers are not found within 100 miles of Gir Forest. Within the sanctuary itself is the only lion subspecies found outside of Africa. This is the very rare Asiatic lion (only a few hundred remain and they face extinction). The lion rules in Gir Forest and no tigers are found there. Tigers are not found in Africa, and are restricted to Asia. Though it is conceivable that a tiger may cross into lion territory, both species are so rare that it is highly unlikely the two would ever meet. On top of this, the Gir Forest is surrounded by farming and agriculture. The lions within the sanctuary are effectively captive in the wild and tigers do not like to cross large stretches of open ground. What would happen if the two species did meet? The very solitary tiger would be little inclined to join in with the more social pride of lions. Apart from periods of mating, tigers even go out of their way to avoid their own species. The Tigon is a hybrid cross between a male Tiger and a female Lion WHY ARE LIGERS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN TIGONS? The large size of the liger and small size of the tigon is due to genomic imprinting the unequal expression of genes depending on parent of origin i.e. whether certain growth genes are inherited from the male or the female. This is linked to the species lifestyle and breeding strategy whether the female mates with only one male while in heat (non-competitive) or whether she mates with many males (competitive). This results in growth dysplasia. The following explanation is greatly simplified as a number of other genes are contributed unequally by the male and female parents and also affect the general health and longevity of the offspring. Lions live in prides led by several adult males. The lionesses mate with each of those males. Each male wants his offspring to be the ones to survive, but the females genes want multiple offspring to survive. The fathers genes promote size of the offspring to ensure that his offspring out-compete any other offspring in the womb at the same time. Genes from the female inhibit growth to ensure that as many offspring as possible survive and that they all have an equal chance. By contrast, tigers are largely solitary and a female on heat normally only mates with one male. There is no competition for space in the womb so the male tigers genes do not need to promote larger offspring. There is therefore no need for the female to compensate, so the offsprings growth goes uninhibited. When a male lion mates with a tigress, his genes promote large offspring because lions are adapted to a competitive breeding strategy. The tigress does not inhibit the growth because she is adapted to a non-competitive strategy. Therefore the offspring (liger) grows larger and stronger than either parent because the effects do not cancel each other out. Ligers take several years to reach full adult size, but it is a myth that ligers never stop growing. When a male tiger mates with a lioness, his genes are not promoting large growth of the offspring because he is adapted to a non-competitive breeding strategy. However, the lioness is adapted to a competitive strategy and her genes inhibit the growth of the offspring. This uneven match means that the offspring (tigons) are often smaller and less robust than either parent. Growth dysplasia has other effects: the size of the placenta may be affected (causing miscarriage), the embryo may be aborted at an early stage due to abnormal growth, the cub may be stillborn or may only survive a few days. In some rodents, mating Species A males with Species B females produces offspring half normal size, but mating Species B males with Species A females cause the offspring to be aborted as they try to grow to several times the normal size. Because of the impossibility of a gene being inherited from only females, there is a competing hypothesis. This hypothesis (allthough not tested) is that the Lions sperm is damaged somehow during fertilization and that a growth inhibiting gene is typically destroyed. It is impossible for a gene carried on a chromosomes to be passed along only from the mother. The reason for this is there are no chromosomes that only a female can have. Female Tigons and Female Ligers both possess a tiger X chromosme and a lion X chromosome, yet only the female Ligers will grow large, this means something must happen to either alter the genes or that the cause of the growth dysplasia lies at least partially outside of the genes. Another possible hypothesis is that the growth dysplasia results from the interaction between lion genes and tiger womb enviroment. The tiger produces a hormone that sets the fetal Liger on a pattern of growth that does not end throughout his life. The hormonal hypothesis is that the cause of the male Ligers growth is his sterility essentially, the male liger remains in the pre-pubertal growth phase. This is not upheld by behavioural evidence despite being sterile, many male ligers become sexually mature and mate with females. In addition, female ligers also attain great size but are fertile.

Revelation through Experience in Heart of Darkness, Going After Cacciat

Revelation through Experience in Heart of Darkness, Going After Cacciato, and The Things They Carried Foreign lands seemingly possessed by evil spirits as well as evil men, ammunition stockpiles, expendable extremities and splintered, non-expendable limbs carpeting the smoking husks of burnt-out villages, the intoxicating colors of burning napalm, and courage mixed with cowardice in the face of extreme peril. These are just a few examples of the spell-binding images presented in the novels read in the class entitled The Literature of War at Wabash College. These images and their accompanying stories do far more than fill the mind with fantastic ideas of war and heroism; they force the reader into uncomfortable situations thereby compelling the him or her to contemplate and evaluate his or her own personal ideas of valor, honor, decency, morality and mortality. While reading these stories, the reader is not only thrust inside the hearts and minds of the characters as he or she accompanies them upon their physical and/or mental journeys, but he or she is also forced to e xplore the darkest corners of being that exist inside every human being, male and female. Almost all of the novels are set during wartime and focus on the trials and tribulations faced by the common soldier. In his book The Great War and Modern Memory, Paul Fussell suggests that war literature can generally be broken down into three stages; the first being the innocence stage before the soldier goes to battle, the second being the loss of innocence precipitated by experiencing the horrors of war, and the third stage being the consideration stage where the soldier is removed from the war and contemplates his experiences. (Fussell). ... ...d Tim O’Brien have lost their innocence and in doing so, they have unwittingly destroyed the blissful ignorance that made their previous lives possible. One of the only means that these three men find to ease their pain is in the telling of stories. By voicing their feelings and experiences, they are able to continue living and cope with the awful truths they have learned about the war and more importantly the truths they have learned about themselves. You might just be entertained by dancing and singing servers. Craving for some oriental flavour? Taste authentic Cantonese cuisine at Hollywood China Bistro or go for South East Asian favourites like noodles and curries at Casa Del Wild. Be it fine-dining or a quick casual lunch you’re after, it’ll be full-filling and fabulous! 3. 2. Service Quality This problem may occur every time even from professional staff, especially, untrained or unqualified staff. For example, when guests want to know some products such as wine list details, they can ask every staff, current F;amp;B staff, rotated staff, or casual staff, because they assume all staff are trained with basic of service knowledge. If a staff gives haphazard information, they will not judge only the staff but also the hotel. 3. 2. 2 Negative brand image When guests are unhappy with poor service, they love to complain to the staff.Dissatisfied guest may never return to use your service again because they do not believe that the service is not worth for their expense. Moreover, dissatisfied guests often tell about bad experience to their friends. This is call negative word of mouth. Negative word of mouth is the most powerful to make the business goes down because people like to ask other people for recommendation ; furthermore, it is the easiest way to find in internet. Most people love to know the bad experience more than good one. So the brand image is used very long time for recovery 1. Personal Benefits ;amp; experiencesHaving internship in Universal Studio Singapore was a great opportunity for me. In there, I worked in fine dining restaurant for 3 months, another 3 months was fast food restaurant. Honestly, I have gained many experiences from them. In fine dining restaurant KT’s Grill and fast food restaurant Celebrity Cafe ;amp;Bakery are totally different, no matter atmosphere, service standard. Western outlet it focuses on the service quality and cafe more concentrate at the service efficiency. So the internship not only shows me that what theoretical knowledge I have to study or learn more but also shows me as the career pathway.Additionally the wok experience will also help build an excellent resume (including relevant work experience) for when I’m out of the classroom and getting a job. 1. 1 F;amp;B operating knowledge Six months working experiences in 2 restaurant, gives me a better understanding about the nature of F;amp;B industry. In western restaurant KT’s Grill, the most important part is the table ser vice â€Å"Table Service† is a restaurant industry term that can mean either the presentation of food to patrons by waiters, or the place settings present on each table.Restaurants without either are usually referred to as â€Å"counter service† establishments. Most fast-food chains fall within this category, as patrons must place their orders, collect their food, and pick up any needed utensils at a centrally located counter, just like my second outlet, celebrity cafe. Table service establishments are usually more expensive, but more work is involved on the restaurant’s part both to set and clear tables and to present food to order. When taken to mean place settings, service typically consists of utensils, a napkin, and a water glass or goblet. After customers order food, a filled dish is added to complete the place setting. Depending on the type of meal typically served, much more may also be included. Traditional Western table service has several types and siz es of spoons, forks, and knives. Larger spoons are for soup, while smaller ones are used for eating dessert or stirring coffee. All place settings have a standard-sized dinner fork, while smaller forks are used for salad and dessert. Steak knives as well as duller, butter-type knives for bread may also be included. Talking about the table delivery, it can create challenges. It is not always easy for me to hold a food and drink-packed tray upright while weaving through dining tables and watching out for other guests at first. Waiters must often spend a lot of time practicing in order to ensure flawless delivery. Many restaurants spend a great deal of time thinking about the message their table service sends. Preparing dishes directly in front of the customer typically takes more time per dish, and is costly in terms of staff attention. If it helps promote a certain ambiance, however, it is usually worth it.Like our restaurant, it is an open kitchen which the guests can see the process how the chef cooking the food. The same is true with staff appearance. Servers who are dressed well, in formal wear, female staff wear white blouse and black skirt, and male staff wear black pant. It often projects a certain image that is lost when they come to the table in jeans. Usually, restaurants design all aspects of their table service to reflect the sort of ambiance they want to create. Fine dining restaurant may have well worn cutlery as its table service, while expensive eateries tend to have more elegant tableware. The decor in restaurants is also crucial as patrons are often eating not just for the food, but also for the overall experience. Everything from the quality and color of the tablecloth to the presence of flowers and overall durability of flatware and goblets plays a part in projecting the image and feel of the establishment. When comes to the menu, it is difficult for us to understand the English menu, because not familiar with the name of food, especially in E nglish version, like striplion, banger;amp;mash, and some desserts as well. Moreover, we have to know what kind of sauce in it, the ingredients†¦ It is a huge challenge for me at first, I have to go through the menu everyday, this practice slowly established a basic knowledge in my mind about the food and beverage that we usually served. And after a week, I can take order everyday, which quickly deepen my understanding all the items in the menu. We must be knowledgeable about the food and beverage so that we will able to answer and handle any question or problems the guest may have. While after I transfer to Celebrity Cafe, 1. 2 Service Sequence Seat the guest ;amp; pass them the menu ;amp;unfold the napkin for them -After order, offer the bread before Appetizer? -Sever the appetizer first – When theoretical experience meets real work experience, it shows many benefits between a management trainee who has knowledge and staff who has work experience and knowledge. The bene fits can be knowledge sharing because the trainee will use his/her knowledge to solve the problem, on the other hand, the staff will use his/her experience. For other benefits, the trainee can be realized that the selected position or department is suitable for them for choosing career pathway in the future.

Comparing Homer s Iliad With Wolfgang Petersen s Film...

In my response I am going to compare Homer’s Iliad with Wolfgang Petersen’s film Troy. The points I am going to compare are the fight between Paris and Menelaus, the role of the gods, the death of Patroclus and the fight between Hector and Achilles. The Iliad is an epic poem consisting of 23 books by Homer, which focuses on 50 days in the ninth year of the Trojan War, whereas the movie Troy directed by Wolfgang Petersen tells the whole 10 year story of the myth. The Trojan War happened in the Bronze Age and was a war between the Mycenaean-Greece kingdom and the kingdom of Troy. Homers Iliad is believed to be one of the first works of western literature and was set 500 years earlier than the time in which he lived. The Iliad is to be listened to, not read, unless you are the poet performing the epic. The poet would chant or sing the Iliad while being accompanied by lyre, to help tell the story. It had a set rhythm and metre in each line of the poem, which the poet had to follow but it is lost in translation as its original written language is Ancient Greek. The film Troy was released on the 14th May 2004 and is loosely based on the Iliad. Brad Pitt, who was 40 years old during the making of this movie, and stars as Achilles. The ending of the film is not from the Iliad but from Virgil’s Aeneid, as the Iliad ends with Hectors death and funeral. The Role of the Gods Throughout the Iliad, gods play an important role and are a focal point. They are always helping out and also
